"The Teacher's Night Before Christmas".

What do excited students, craft projects, room mothers, nursing home visits, harried shopping, and near-disastrous pageants have in common? They are all a part of a teacher's pre-Christmas experience. The poem highlights the chaotic atmosphere of a school during the holiday season

THE TEACHERS NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

[Transcript]

'Twas the week before Christmas and all through the town, Every schoolteacher scurried-They could not slow down.

Their brains were all frazzled from school celebrations, And the seasonal rush of pre-Christmas vacation.

The festive art projects, A yearly tradition, Had ended as always in room demolition!

And a nursing-home trip earned one principal's pout. When Pierre pulled the fire alarm. They cleared the place out!

Then the holiday pageants produced minor troubles-Like the Virgin and Joseph on stage blowing bubbles.

And then one of God's Angels got airsick and cried, "Mrs. Bigler, I've thrown up on Joe, Tom, and Clyde!"

But when gala school programs were done and folks parted, The room mom "commandos" had just gotten started.

They'd planned party events to make all students drool, Like wild scavenger hunts where kids ran through the school,

And unique Yuletide Bingo, which started out nice. Until Mike Hattendorf won a bingo game twice!

Then the other kids hollered and threw such a fit that the game was short-lived because everyone quit.

But the moms were undaunted. They moved on to crafts with some glue guns and scissors and spray paint and masks.

And inside of one hour, The ten-minute wreaths were lying all over and drying on sheets.

Then the students and mothers departed the school, And the teachers rushed home-Just a few days 'til yule!

With a tree still to trim, Christmas candy to make, The cards yet to mail, Plus a fruitcake to bake.

So when Christmas Eve came they were all feeling blue, For the teachers still had Christmas shopping to do!

Thus, they started at once to converge on the mall, But the sight of a school bus in flight stopped them all!

It was jolly St. Nick steering down from the sky, In a sport coat (suede elbows). New glasses, and tie.

He was quite the professor-And his class looked "in session" With a busload of elves far too busy to question.

He'd assigned them the task Of creating a toy that not even a child like Ben Grey could destroy!

When he stepped off the bus All the teachers felt fine-Then he opened a grade book And said, "Get in line.

"Mrs. Bigler, Miss Haley, Miss Elks, Mr. Best, Mrs. Bruni, Ms. Jance, Dr. Johns, and the rest!

"You've been working so hard For your students, I've seen, That you've run short on time For your own Christmas scene."

"I've been checking my records throughout this past year, And your grades indicate that you've nothing to fear!

"Santa truly loves teachers, Support staff, and such. Your students are blessed 'Cause you've given so much."

"So I'm telling you all And your colleagues here, too, Stop this last-minute shopping-I'll take care of you!

"Go on home. Get to bed. Leave the Big Guy in charge! I'll take care of those wish lists, No matter how large."

Then he beeped the bus horn While he stepped on the gas, And he gave a soft laugh As his bus flew on past.

"Merry Christmas to all!" His voice rang out with might. "But especially to teachers And especially tonight!"

Dear Santa, Love Collection

Editor’s note: Here are some letters mailed to Santa Claus via the Park Rapids Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce’s special mailbox at Pioneer Park. Merry Christmas!

Dear Santa,

I wish for (if it’s possible) the world to be Minecraft and for Autobots (good Transformers) to be real and Bumblebee to be my car. I also want to be 15 and Ironhide, Racket, Jazz and Mirage to be alive. I also wish to be able to, like, shift through dreams. So, like, for some time when I’m Winterix Prime (Transformer-me) and sometimes Willow (99 Nights-me) and, yeah, you get it … anyways, that’s all I’d for Christmas and if none of these are possible, (1) don’t give me a Bumblebee action figure (hate! >:p) and (2) write me back please! And I’m sorry for all the naughty things I did.

Your love, Alexei

Dear Santa,

We will be in Florida for Christmas. Will you please come to our house the weekend before Christmas? You are the best. I love you. Makeup, Gabb watch, Legos – mermaid or unicorn, label maker.

(unsigned)

Hi Santa,

I am 5 years old. I would like to know how Rudolph is doing. I would also like you to know I have been well behaved. I have just a small Christmas list. (1) A tablet like my big brothers have. (2) Remote control Christmas tree with lights. (3) A gumball machine. (4) A yoyo. (5) A tablet. (6) Remote control car with a claw. (7) Remote control fire truck. (8) Fidget spinner. (9) Wrecking ball. (10) Bulldozer/crane. (11) Pedal tractor and attachments. I will have cookies and milk on the table for you. I will also sprinkle reindeer food out. Thank you, Santa.

Waylon

Dear Santa,

This year for Christmas I would like (1) A magical mermaid puzzle. (2) Dizzy Duckies game. (3) House trampoline. (4) Tent, mushroom. (5) Craft supplies. (6) Cake decorating supplies. (7) Makeup. (8) Dot-to-dot. (9) Charm bracelets. (10) Dig It Up Discoveries mermaids. (11) Speaker. (12) Perfume. (13) Sol de Janeiro. (14) Adidas. (15) Phone. (16) Uggs. (17) Elfskin. (18) Christmas pajamas. (19) Pop Tart plushies. (20) Super NeeDoh. (21) Bag charm. (22) Mini fridge.

Love, your best friend, Elsie

Dear Santa,

My name is Ruby and I want a giraffe for Christmas. I also want a camera and a princess toy. Rose wants a stuffed animal and a playmat. I’ve been good this year. What kind of cookies do you want?

Love, Ruby (3) and Rose (2 months)

Hi Santa,

It’s me, Bayley from Fargo, N.D. The real reason is not to tell you where I live, it is to tell you what I want. So I, pretty please, want one of those dollhouses that Norah has or a Barbie camper, please. (Or be the most popular.) And … your holiday is my fav one. Tell Mrs. Claus I say hi and give her this note, please.

Bayley

Dear Santa,

I hope everything is doing good in the North Pole and hope you’re doing good too. Also, I have a joke for you. What bank does a polar bear go to? The snow bank.

Additionally, I am kind and nice, but when Deklyn ticks me off I lose my jingle bells.

Anyways, what I will really, really would like, well, not like, love to have, Officer Judy Hopps (Zootopia 2) and Nick Wild and Gary De’Snake with a blanket that I can use for movie night because my mom might get me the Zootopia 2 movie. And I hope this is not too much, but could you help dad quit smoking and not swear so much?

Love, Tina

P.S. Where are my manners? How are the elves and reindeer and Mrs. Claus? Merry Christmas!

Dear Santa,

We worried that none of the carols mention a GPS for your sleigh, so we’ve enclosed a map to our house. Please turn right at Astoria, fly over the Multnomah Falls, take a right at Sea Lion Caves, and steer towards the Painted Hills. If the police pull you over, we’ve included your fines. That happens to Daddy a lot.

Your loving and helpful friends,

Adam, Stephanie, Christin, and Heather Appleyard

P.S. Our house has a door and some windows. You can’t miss it.
