Twas A Quilters Christmas

This poem was published in
Quilting Today, Issue No. 9, Oct/Nov. 1988.
It is called:
Ode to a Quilter, by Gloria E. Webster
(with apologies to Clement Moore)

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house
not a creature was stirring except a wee mouse
and Mama in her kerchief, still stitching away
to finish a quilt for the very next day.

"I've done one for Steve and one for sweet Sue.
There's one for young Paul and my Sarah, too.
If only I finish this last one tonight,
little Mary will surely cry with delight!"

Then out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
she jumped from her chair to see what was the matter.
"Now what's all that noise," she thought with a frown,
"I do hope the old chimney's not falling down!"

She peered out the window and what did appear
but a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer -
With a little spry driver, so lively and quick,
she knew it certainly was not old Saint Nick!

And in a twinkling she heard on the roof
the prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
Then down the chimney he came, dressed all in red.
She thought she was dreaming and still in her bed!

He was clad all in fur from his head to his foot
and he called out to her, "You should clean out that soot!"
"Clean out that soot? No time to sew?
Young man, you're crazy - now go, go, GO!
I must finish this quilt before the morning light.
I've been sewing all day and most of the night."

He danced as he worked, a right jolly old elf,
and she laughed as she watched him, in spite of herself.
Then he filled all the stockings from his patchwork sack.
It was stuffed to the brim and hung on his back.

He gave a quick nod and when he was through,
smiling at her, up the chimney he flew.
Dazed, she wondered if that really might be...
"No," she murmured, "my eyes are playing tricks on me."
And grimly she put needle to cloth once again.
"Next year, truly, on January First I'll begin,
no more sewing and quilting on the very last night.
These weird dreams are too much." Then she turned out the light.
"Yes, next year I'll be organized. I'll be done on time."
("Ho, ho," chortled Santa, "Seems I've heard that line.")

Now her quilts were all wrapped and under the tree;
Of course, not all were complete - it just couldn't be.
But tucked into two boxes were notes with this line:
"To be finished after Christmas - Mom ran out of time!"

And Santa was heard to exclaim as he drove out of sight,

"Merry Christmas to all - and happy quilting each night!"

The Real First Night Of Christmas

'Twas the first night of Christmas a long time ago
The hillside was peaceful, the moon was aglow.
The world couldn't know from what happened before
That men would remember this night evermore.

The sheep on the hillside--their days journey over
Were dreaming sweet dreams of a field full of clover.
The shepherds were watchful while guarding their flock
The earth was their pillow, the stars were their clock.

Then all of a sudden, they jumped at the sight
Of the sky all ablaze with a heavenly light.
They huddled in fear, then they started to rise
As the lightening-like flash tore open the skies.<

The heavens were split by the silvery ray.
The dark disappeared and the night became day.
And lo, at the end of the rainbow of light
Appeared then an angel to banish their fright.

The angel brought news of a birth in a manger
And bade them to hasten to welcome the stranger.
For Mary had just given birth to a boy
Whose coming would bring so much comfort and joy.

A choir of angels looked down from the sky
And heavenly voices were heard from on high:
Peace be on earth and good will to all men.
The Savior has come on this night, Amen.

The heavenly angels then faded from sight.
The sky once again turned from day to night.
The shepherds all quietly rose from the ground
And hurried to go where the child would be found.

As they reached Bethlehem and the inn was in sight
From the barn came a trickle of half-hidden light.
It led like a path to a soft little bed
And shone very tenderly on a child's head.

The child in the manger was sleeping so sound
His eyes were still closed, as the shepherds stood round.
From that instant of grace on that night long ago
Thousands of years would be warmed by the glow.

Guided by light from a bright shining star
Came a pilgrimage led of three kings from afar.
They were dressed in the finest of satins and lace.
Their complexions were that of an Orient race.

The three wealthy kings were wise men and proud
But they went to the Christ child and solemnly bowed.
They came bearing treasures of incense and gold
To that sweet little child, still not very old.

The star in the sky twinkled down from above
The world was awakened to kindness and love.
The past was forgotten, the future was bright
And the spirit of Christmas was born on that night.

Twas The Gift

It was right around midnight and I heard a clatter
I wasn't concerned what was the matter
I fluffed my pillow and reassured Ma -
"Go back to sleep: It's Santa Claus."

Down the chimney to the living room
He took care of business like a sonic boom;
And then I heard a "Ho, Ho, Ho",
And I knew off he'd go.
But, all of a sudden I heard
a thump, thump, thump
Perhaps Santa's sleigh on my house did bump.

So I decided I better take a look.
I put up the ladder and climbed to the roof.
Now, I knew Santa had looked in his book
And he'd found that I've been good,
but up on the roof what did appear
a special gift from a reindeer.

I've seen droppings before but never this size
fall out of the clouds or down from the sky
Here was something earthly made
a miniature sewer on my roof did lay
The size of a bowling ball
The smell of chocolate chip
And over the side of my roof; An awful drip.

Then Ma awoke to look outside
There she saw a terrible sight -
Tho not too smart, she did know
That brown is not the color of snow.

I took double strength garbage bag to the roof
and amidst the prints of reindeer hoof -
I took my shovel and held my nose
Put the 'gift' in the bag, and got the hose.

As I watered the mess to the ground
I looked up for a passing sound
It was Santa's sleigh,
reindeer collars going jingle
Santa waved - I gave the reindeer the finger -
"Goodnight to All" I heard him say
"Hey Santa - next year come without the sleigh."

Have no doubt that Santa is real
He does come each and every year
The evidence left behind is surely the proof
cause I was blessed with Rudolph's poop.

Holiday Dieting Tips

If you eat dozens of chocolates quickly, the constant motion might help burn a few calories!

Cookie pieces contain no calories because the process of breakage cause calorie leakage!

If you drink a diet soda with a candy bar, they cancel each other out!

If no one sees you eat it, it has no calories.

Food used for medicinal purposes NEVER count, such as hot chocolate, and Sara Lee Cheesecake

Repeat multiple times "I am not fat, I am caloriccally gifted"

Anything consumed while standing has no calories. This due to gravity and the density of the caloric mass

When eating with someone else, calories don't count if you both eat the same amount.

Cookie pieces contain no calories because the process of breakage causes calorie leakage.

If you eat the food off someone else's plate, it doesn't count.

If you eat standing up the calories all go to your feet and get walked off.

Food eaten at Christmas parties has no calories, courtesy of Santa.

Movie-related foods are much lower in calories simply because they are a part of the entertainment experience and not part of one's personal fuel.

    and most importantly, always remember

    STRESSED spelled backwards=DESSERTS

Why Christmas Trees Are Better Than A Man

A Christmas tree doesn't care how many other Christmas trees you have had in the past.

Christmas trees don't get mad if you use exotic electrical devices.

A Christmas tree doesn't care if you have an artificial one in the closet.

-------------

A Christmas tree doesn't get mad if you break one of its balls. You can feel a Christmas tree before you take it home.

When you are done with a Christmas tree you can throw it on the curb and have it hauled away.

-------------

A Christmas tree doesn't get jealous around other Christmas trees. You don't have to put up with a Christmas tree all year long.

A Christmas tree is always erect.Even small ones give satisfaction

-------------

A Christmas tree stays up for 12 days and nights.

It looks good - even with the lights on.

And last but not least...

A Christmas tree doesn't get mad if you tie it up and throw it in the back of your car.
